Sometimes it’s better late than never.

I almost forgot that I was featured in China Times Weekly a few weeks ago. Three female authors were interviewed, titled “Beautiful Authors Talk about Gourmet”, sharing their favorite type of cuisine, their ideas of gourmet dining and the influences and impacts that Food & Beverage has brought to them.

And I said, “Food is just like men. You gotta try it first regardless of what type of cuisine it is. You owe it to yourself.”

DIVA in Cosmopolitan Magazine (Taiwan / April Issue / Page 80-81)

There’s a featured interview about me in this month’s Cosmopolitan magazine

Job well done! Thank you, Cosmopolitan Taiwan!

I’ll be the first one to admit that I’m not a fan of buffet. Quoted by an old boyfriend, “I don’t like to eat on a budget.” The truth is that buffet turns me off for the following reasons:

1. Freshness. I have no idea how long the food have been sitting there.
2. Sanitary. Patrons usually poke at the food on display and tend to talk while they’re doing so.
3. Taste. Somehow after I sample a few items on the buffet table everything sort of has the same bland taste. I either can’t tell the difference or everything just tastes the same.
4. Health. Most buffet offers food that are high in fat and low in nutrition. And because most people who love buffet want to make sure that their money is well spent they stuff themselves ‘til they go into a food coma.

Then I was introduced to MARKET CAFÉ and it clears all my concerns regarding buffet. MARKET CAFÉ is located in the basement of Landmark Club, owned and managed by the Ambassador Hotel Group.

Yes. It’s located in TienMou and it’s still within Taipei city. There’s an underground parking garage and it’s only 40NT per hour. When you dine within the Landmark Club they’ll validate your parking for 25% discount.

When I first walked into MARKET CAFÉ I noticed the writing on the wall. It said, “Food DNA – No MSG / No Colorings / No Preservatives / No Artificial Flavors / No Additives.”

That’s a bold statement but I believe that should be the most basic guideline for every restaurant, eatery and café in the 21st century.

Innovative Way to Enjoy Buffet “Charge by SECTIONS” /

During the week you can simply go for the salad bar alone, or BBQ bar, or Asian Noodles Bar. Of course the All-Inclusive Buffet is always available. I love the fact that I do have a choice even when dining at a buffet restaurant. The fees will vary depending on what you choose. Let’s say I don’t feel like splurging today and all I want is lots and lots of vegetables. Then I’ll go for the salad bar and that will be NT420+10% / person. In addition fruit & dessert bar is included with coffee / tea. What a bargain and a great way to stay healthy! You won’t overeat because you already set your restriction when you come in.

Eco-Friendly. Healthy. All Natural. Fresh. Made-to-Order.

The salad bar is awesome! Everything is fresh for you to choose from. You simply take a bowl and put in whatever you like into it. The blackboard will list today’s just-in rare vegetables. Then you hand the bowl to the staff behind the counter and tell him the dressing of your choice. He’ll mix it up just the way you like it!

The same concept of Live Station Cooking goes for the Asian Noodles Bar. You can choose the ingredients, fresh veggie, fish, meat and etc. Then you’ll decide on the type of noodles and broth. The chef will cook it right in front of you – a steaming hot bowl of noodle soup!

Sometimes you just have to let it all hang out. The All-Inclusive Buffet is really an eye-opening experience! Not only can you enjoy the salad bar, BBQ Bar, Asian Noodles Bar, Fruit & Dessert but also Indian Gourmet Dishes, Dim Sum and Italian Gelato Ice Cream! This is what I truly love – A FEAST!

Buffet is no longer boring because you’re the master to decide how you want it, how you eat it and how you enjoy it!

(What happens in Taipei stays in Taipei!)

My Home BBQ / Hot Pot

Daddy’s Girl for Life

I don’t ever deny the fact that I’m such a daddy’s girl. And I’ve always been a daddy’s girl for as long as I can remember.

My dad often does the sweetest thing without saying a word. When my book was published in mid-February he went to the bookstore and bought 10 copies. Then he asked me to sign those books before giving them away to friends and families. There I was, wondering what my relatives and my dad’s friends would think of my dating exploits as they began to flip through the pages. Then within a week my dad returned to the bookstore and purchased another 10 copies. Just thinking about it my eyes get all teary.

Over the 4 day weekend I was sick with food poisoning since the second night. So I was in bed sleeping all day and night.

Daddy walked into my bedroom to check on me, “Are you staying in?”

I know. It’s a miracle that I’m home! LOL.

“Yeah. I’m staying in.”

This food poisoning got me really sick. I was up in the middle of the night throwing up and it also upset my stomach for two days. Even now I still don’t have much appetite for anything. That’s unusual for me cuz I’m always thinking about what to eat, where to go and what to eat next.

“How’s the book sale so far?” Dad asked.

I don’t feel like explaining the whole ordeal with the publisher to him. The whole thing is unfortunate and it’s a mess to say the least.

“I have no idea.” And that’s the truth. I don’t know the sales number but we all know that it’s not on the best-selling chart either.

“Do you have enough money?” Dad had his hands in his shirt pockets as if he’s got a stack of money ready to be handed over.

I bet my dad thinks that most authors don’t earn enough to make the ends meet. That’s probably true since only a dozen or so authors make a killing from book sales and I’m not one of them. But the truth is that my livelihood doesn’t depend on my book sales. Thank god!

“I’m good. I have money.” My body was weak, my head was spinning but my voice was firm.

“Are you sure you have enough to spend?” Dad asked again and this time with a grin on his face as if he’s glad to hand me the money he’s already prepared.

“Yes I’m sure. I have plenty to spend & splurge.” I reassured him.

“Okay. Just so you know…you can always come to me if you need money. You know where to find me. Having some extra in your pocket can never hurt right?”

Even though Daddy smiled as he walked out of my room but I was all choked up underneath my comforter.

Daddy once joked that the reason I have never been married is due to the fact that he’s given me all the best in this world within his ability since the day I was born. Somehow that intimidates some of the potential suitors, leaving me unmarried at the age of 37.

I say that’s non-sense. I don’t see how a father’s deepest love for his daughter has anything to do with her future marriage. If anything it only makes her feel loved and she’s a better person because of it.

For those men who are intimidated by me obviously you’re simply not man enough. Don’t’ blame your self-esteem issue on me.

Single or married I’ll always be a daddy’s girl. NO DOUBT.

Last but not least I dedicate this article to all the fathers in the world who love their daughters wholeheartedly and all the daddy’s girls cuz you know what I’m talking about!

Saveurs:Authentic Family Style Cuisine from Southwest of France

According to a featured article on Yahoo! Travel Taipei is one of the world’s most underrated cities. I’ll second that in a heartbeat! Taipei is truly a hidden gem in Asia. Yes, I’ll admit that Taipei is not as international as Hong Kong or Singapore and it will never be for some odd reasons. But the people are the friendliest folks you’ll meet among the Mandarin-speaking countries!

I’m always fascinated by foreigners who wanted to set up their businesses in Taiwan. And I happen to know a few who started their restaurants in Taipei. The most recent story has to be Mayan Grill by Erik Siddons.

Upon first encounter I can’t help but wonder if this guy is serious about running a restaurant in Taipei, let alone a Mexican joint! I kid you not. He looks like he’s one of the lawyers on Boston Legal – tall, charming, handsome with a killer smile.

Growing up in Southern California Erik was introduced to Mexican cuisine at an early age. As a child he showed great interest and enthusiasm in cooking. So he started making fish tacos & margaritas for friends and families before he reached the legal age for drinking alcohol. In other words, Erik has perfected fish tacos and margaritas with 20 years+ experiences! These two items are highly recommended on Mayan Grill’s menu.

It’s fair to say that cooking is Erik’s lifetime passion because he gave up 10 years+ law practice to start a Mexican restaurant in Taipei. When asked about the career change, “My income now is 1/10 of what I used to make,” Erik says with a broad grin on his face.

For first time visitors to Mayan Grill some might find the place too upscale because it’s a contemporary Mexican restaurant, not a hole-in-the-wall taqueria. That quality also reflects on the food served here. It’s healthy and not greasy! Everything on the menu is made from scratch in the kitchen. And the menu consists of traditional dishes as well as Erik’s modern original creations. If you enjoy spicy food, be sure to sample Erik’s homemade Diablo hot sauces – Devil’s Water is the entry level and Devil’s Tear will bring joy to those diehard hot sauce lovers.

As for desserts chocolate brownie and vanilla flan are heavenly. Imported Mexican beers are perfect to go with any dish you might choose from the menu. Let’s not forget about tequilas and I really love the rum from Guatemala!

Fluent in Mandarin Erik can easily communicate with his staff and customers, explaining the concepts of Mayan Grill. He believes that Taipei is ready for an authentic Mexican restaurant like Mayan Grill and so do I. Taipei might not be international like Hong Kong and Singapore but we sure love good food! On top of that who doesn’t love made-from-scratch healthy cuisine that only uses the freshest ingredients?

Spring Feast 春季菜色 at GALERIE Bistro, Taipei

MAINE LOBSTER WITH ANGEL HAIR PASTA

SEABASS SOUP

The weather changed for the better today. It was hot like summertime without the humidity. I had dinner at GALERIE Bistro, which is one of my favorite restaurants in Taipei. On a lovely day like this sitting in the garden of GALERIE Bistro is truly a treat! You don’t have to be rich and famous to lead a high life such as this!

My dinner consisted of SEABASS SOUP and MAINE LOBSTER & ANGEL HAIR PASTA – perfect dishes for the spring!

SEABASS SOUP is a clear broth with onion, tomato, cilantro and lots of seabass. It’s refreshing and will perk up your appetite.

MAINE LOBSTER & ANGEL HAIR PASTA is a very light dish. Lobster is buttery, tender and juicy. Some say that the best lobster in the world comes from Maine and that’s what I had tonight. I chose to have angel hair pasta cuz it can soak up the lobster juice easily. It’s a personal preference and customers can choose any other pasta as they wish.

To top it off I ordered a glass of Chardonnay to go with MAINE LOBSTER & ANGEL HAIR PASTA. It’s simply MARVELOUS!

LIFE IS GOOD!
