Even though we cannot see ultraviolet radiation with our naked eyes the health effects on the skins of UV radiation cannot be ignored. Many dermatologists advocate sun protection measures and yet people still long for an all-over tan and that golden bronze look. One can wear as little as bikini and lie down under the sun for some color and still ends up with some tan lines. Therefore tanning salons began to pop up in the 80s. Indoor tanning solves a few problems for those who love to be kissed by the sun; not affected by rainy days, the time spent in tanning and the environment are carefully controlled, tanning in the nude in a private area.

A. Now tanning salons are available in Taipei. Powerhouse International has brought in expensive tanning beds from the U.S. This tanning bed is not only to give you a healthy glow of all-over tan but also it is equipped with a special pulsating LED unit for photomodulation beauty treatments.
B. There are also tanning booths where you can strip naked and get tan while standing up for 10 minutes. From the outside the tanning booths look like space shuttles in a glance. For first timer you can come in for a session every other day and for approximately three times a week. Depending on your natural skin tone and ideal color of tan the number of tanning sessions may vary. Once you’ve achieved the gorgeous tan you want, just come in once a month for maintenance. You’ll also apply tanning lotion to your skin and you may choose among different brands and ingredients of tanning lotions in order to get the best result. For fees the options are as the following: single session is NT$250, five sessions purchased in advance is NT$1,000, monthly pass﹙NT$1,750﹚, three months pass﹙NT$4,500﹚, six month pass﹙NT$6,500﹚and one year pass﹙NT$10,000/complimentary tanning lotion worth NT$800﹚.

The Wu Family has been in the restaurant business for years. After their daughter became a vegetarian due to religious reasons she managed to convince her parents to give up the already well-established business. Instead they started a new business two and a half years ago and it’s devoted to only vegetarian cuisine. It is located in the first alley right behind Lai-Lai Sheraton Hotel. Its well-lit dining space makes the experience even more enjoyable.

Serenity Restaurant serves pure vegetarian dishes. That means no eggs or dairy products with the exception of two hotpots that contain milk as soup stock. Member of the Wu Family are vegetarians who cannot stand bland taste and love flavors. They traveled to Sichuan province for recipes and inspirations in order to make healthy and spicy Sichuan cuisine.

The signature dish “Steamed Sticky Tofu”﹙NT$400﹚is full of aroma and flavorful without the grease. If you’re a hotpot lover “Preserved Chinese Cabbage Hotpot”﹙NT$300/small﹚is delicious and healthy for your body. “Serenity Good Health Hotpot”﹙NT$1,000﹚is big enough for 8 to 10 to share and you’ll have to phone in to order it at least 1 day in advance.

For the summer ahead new dishes are added to the weekday lunch specials. “Japanese Seaweed Cold Noodle”﹙NT$180/including salad, soup and two side dishes﹚is very refreshing on a hot summer day. “Chinese Cabbage Salad”﹙NT$180﹚is like cold slaw and you may ask for slight sour taste for your liking. “Sliced Apples Wrapped In Japanese Perilla frutesce”﹙NT$260﹚is an unusual veggie and fruit combination – a thin layer of peanut butter and crispy apples are wrapped in green leaves. “Jew’s Ear Fungus Sichuan Style Salad”﹙NT$200﹚is slightly spicy and full of nutrients. Jew’s ear fungus is high in protein and that’s why it’s also known as the chicken meat in vegetables. “Steamed Sweet Yam & Vegetable Meat”﹙NT$300﹚accords with the latest diet trend of eating fiber-rich food such as yam. If you love hot and spicy “Hot & Spicy Cold Noodles”﹙NT$160﹚is for sure to perk up your appetite.

Renowned chef Justin Quek has surprised us again with his culinary skills! The newly open Just in Bistro & Wine Bar uses the freshest local ingredients to create comfort food. Sommelier’s wine selection to pair with bistro cuisine and serving full menu even after 9 pm are some of the reasons why people flock here. Justin says, “It’s now the time of Bistronomics – reasonable prices for delicate and simple bistro cuisine. We offer you a meeting place to hang out and get something to eat and drink. It doesn’t have to be a sit-down dinner. You can eat & drink standing up at the bar – relax, talk as loud as you like and just be yourself.”

A. Kevin Hu is not only the restaurant manager but also a sommelier. He makes excellent recommendation based on professional knowledge. Single glass starts from NT$160. If you like it then consider get the whole bottle. Daily happy hour begins at 5:30 ‘till 7:30 with a special cocktail promotion﹙buy one get one free﹚with complimentary tapas. Come here once and you’ll want to come here after work everyday. Monday’s special is NT$500 for one Just in pizza and two beers. There is no service charge because “it’s just as cozy as if eating at a friend’s house; only if you like the service, then you may tip our hardworking wait staff directly.” Says Chef Quek.
B. Taiwan is surrounded by sea on all sides and therefore seafood variety is abundant. Justin is inspired by it and presents the freshest seafood as the special recommendation written up on the blackboard. “Grilled Langoustines with olive oil & basil”﹙NT$398/160 grams﹚is so fresh and it tastes delicious with simple seasoning of olive oil and basil. “Clams a la Mariniere in Casserole”﹙NT$130﹚is perfect with white wine. Order 5 or 6 Spanish tapas to share among friends, enjoy good food, catch up with friends and have a good time!
C. “Gourmet Cheese Burger, Salad & Fries”﹙NT$360﹚has hand chopped sirloin burger patty with mushrooms and Gruyere cheese. This is one of the most popular dishes because once people try it and they love it.

Bartender: Whitey

Strawberry Shochu-Rita

材料/Ingredients:
1 Strawberry
0.2 oz Fruit Sugar
2 oz Shochu
0.5 oz Cointreau
2 oz Sour Mix

做法/Directions:
Mix all the ingredients together with ice and top it off with swirls of whipped Japanese plum foams.

Ever since A-Plus opened in 2007 it strives to stay one step ahead of the trends. In recent years many Japanese restaurants in the U.S. began using shochu in their cooking; now you can enjoy similar cuisine as well. “Grilled Lamb Chops On Stone”﹙NT$320﹚is served on a hot platter with a layer of sliced potatoes and a small amount of Italian marinara sauce. Pour some shochu onto the dish, light up and eat it as soon as the flame is out. You have to eat it right away because lamb chops are most tender while hot. Right about now you can order a glass of Shochu-Jito﹙NT$180﹚. The idea comes from Spanish mojito. Instead of mint leaves this drink is made with Japanese Perilla frutesce, giving it an aroma that’s only found in Asia.

The main customer demographics at A-Plus is mostly women. Therefore the menu and the drink list cater to the liking of today’s women and their taste becomes the first priority. “Sliced Japanese Octopus Topped With Vinegar Jelly”﹙NT$180﹚is a very refreshing appetizer. Sliced octopus is laid out on a bed of thinly sliced cucumbers and covered in vinegar jelly which is a secret recipe. Most women love strawberry and Shochu-Rita is the No.1 selling cocktail at A-Plus. The white foam on top is not whipped cream but in-house special - Japanese plum foams. And the best thing about it is that unlike whipped cream it is nonfat! Now don’t you wish the bartender had filled your margarita glass with even more of it?

Easy House Vegetarian Cuisine was established in 2003 – the year when SARS epidemic struck Taiwan. Upon its sixth anniversary it has seven branches throughout the island, using healthy fresh ingredients to make creative fusion vegetarian cuisine. It is an alternative choice for vegetarians. When you walk into Easy House Vegetarian Cuisine the very Zen-like décor will instantly put you at ease. There is a fresh pot of authentic vintage PuErh tea on each table – it is all you can drink complimentary house tea. In this spacious dining room it’s rather a treat to take your time and enjoy a healthy meal.

By changing the menu every two years more varieties are introduced on a regular basis. Every quarter seasonal specialties are represented and only limited supply available. For summer 2009 the first recommendation is “Pumpkin And Vegetable Rice”﹙NT240/ À la carte;NT$420/set meal﹚is fried rice with jasmine rice, purple sticky rice, oats, brown rice, baby pumpkins and pickled vegetables – the last two ingredients are imported from Japan. Japanese pickled vegetable is natural green leafy vegetable and provided natural seasoning and therefore no condiment is needed. The second recommendation is “Portuguese Angel Hair In Soup” ﹙NT240/ À la carte;NT$420/set meal﹚is Italian angel hair, fresh vegetables and Hokkaido seaweed served in soup stock made of Thai curry and French milk. It has rich aroma and might taste slightly spicy – perfect to awaken your appetite during the humid summertime.

90% of the customers order the set menu because it serves a variety of food and is nutritionally balanced. It includes, fruit & vegetable energy juice, Japanese salad, pot soup, main course, seasonal fruit and desserts. Each course is served one after another like standard western dining etiquettes. As long as you are not in a hurry you can easily spend two hours enjoy this 6-course meal. Easy House Vegetarian Cuisine offers full menu all day and takeouts are available. Everything in “Relaxation Bento Box Set”﹙NT$280﹚, “Bliss Bento Box Set”﹙NT$240﹚and “Joy Bento Box Set”﹙NT$300﹚is almost the same﹙without the fruit and vegetable energy juice﹚ as the dine-in set menu at a discount price.

Jasmine and Joanne are best friends and they became vegetarians due to the no killing philosophy. Soon they realized that most vegetarian restaurants can’t cater to their dietary needs. As a result they decided to put their culinary skills to work and start a vegetarian restaurant of their own. However, their day time job – showbiz takes up most of their time and on top of that they travel abroad frequently. Therefore Blossoming is reservation only – you must call two days in advance to book a table. Otherwise you’ll be very disappointed to find the door locked if you just decide to show up on an impulse. When the weather is nice and sunny you may sit in the garden, enjoy a hearty healthy meal in this relaxing environment while being kissed by the sun.

Blossoming is not aimed to make a profit but for good karma. Jasmine and Joanne have become close friends with customers and together they get involved in charity events, such as visiting senior homes all over Taiwan. They both love traveling, especially to Burma, Thailand, India, Nepal and Tibet. Through experiences in these foreign countries they look for inspirations of creative exotic cuisine. Most dishes are based on the cuisines of their favorite traveling destinations. In addition every dish is vegetarian without eggs or alcohol. No menu is available. Everything is served family style based on the number of guests﹙three dishes for 2 people; four dishes for 3 people and so on﹚

“Tomato Salad”, a traditional Burmese dish, is ideal for the upcoming hot and humid summer. “Spicy Hot Vegetarian Chicken” is by far the most popular dish. Once you take a bite, it’s hard to believe that it’s not meat! Vegetarians who love spicy food will absolutely love it. “Masala Stir-Fry Eggplants” is Nepali. Pair is with Thai jasmine rice﹙cooked with sweet fennel﹚and you won’t be able to stop until it’s all gone. Thanks to Blossoming - Vegetarians won’t have to give up world cuisine just because they give up meat!

After all these years frozen yogurt is finally going to be available in Taiwan. 25-year-old Hubert Chen imports ingredients directly from the U.S. and establishes a frozen yogurt shop called Yogurt Art. Now you won’t have to travel far for the authentic frozen yogurt. Every since its opening day Yogurt Art has been attracting youngsters, men and women alike, especially those who belong to the adjacent health clubs and are health conscious. They choose to come to Yogurt Art for a light snack since they avoid pigging out after a rigorous workout. Frozen yogurt is popular for several reasons: it is nonfat, the calorie is only 1/3 of the regular ice cream and it is rich in calcium. No wonder frozen yogurt is considered the healthiest dessert abroad.

Hubert Chen was born and raised in San Francisco. When he decided to move to Taiwan to start his own business, his parents are very supportive of his business idea as well. In four months he started from scratch and now his effort has paid off. He also lost 15 lbs due to overwork. There are 40 flavors available at Yogurt Art and everyday 8 flavors will be featured. The flavors will change according to season changes and popularity. Having frozen yogurt is even more fun now because it is DIY style ﹙Do it yourself / self-serve﹚at Yogurt Art.

A. Select a cup﹙Pink/individual; Blue/family﹚, press down the handle of your desired flavor and decide the amount
B. Add fruits or nuts as toppings, weight it at the counter﹙NT$52/100 grams﹚, pay for it and then bon appetite!
C. Every frozen yogurt machine contains two different flavors. You can make a swirl if you like – every bite will be double the flavors double the fun!

Who's The Real Scumbag?!

Words of Wisdom from Dalai Lama: All major religious traditions carry basically the same message and that is LOVE, COMPASSION, AND FORGIVENESS; the important thing is they should be part of our daily lives.

My cell phone rang and I looked at the caller ID. It’s Vinny from my previous job.

V: How are you?

Me: Really good.

V: Guess what? I ran into a scumbag yesterday.

Me: Who? Who’s the scumbag?

V: That scumbag you dated several years ago. Oh get this. He’s getting married. I met his fiancé too.

Me: ﹙Dude, I think you’re a bigger scumbag than my ex!﹚Don’t tell me that you wanted to call me to share his engagement?!?!﹙scumbag!!!﹚

V: Aren’t you upset?

Me: Should I be upset? Would you like me to be upset?! I can pretend to be upset if that makes you happy.

V: Well…….it’s just…..you know…..

Me: Sorry. I don’t know. I loved him when we’re together ‘cuz he loved me too. I forgive you and please find something better to do with your life. Go practice on your compassion!

Fifty years down the road Beiping Tao Ran Ting Restaurant is managed by the third generation and almost full house everyday. Young and old alike, including westerners, everyone comes here for roast ducks. Manager Mr. Yang Tien-lin started learning all there is to know about Beiping roast duck when he was a sixth grader. Now he still works in the kitchen, roasting ducks all day long. He too takes turns with his apprentices to slice ducks by the dining table. When it comes to roast ducks he insists on certain criteria. He teamed up with a duck farm in Yilan that only provides live ducks to him exclusively. Most farms slaughter ducks after raising them for 60 days. Manager Yang believes that good duck meat requires at least 90 days of growth. Each duck weights 3.3 kilograms and only charcoal will be used for roasting. The sweet noodle auce is stir-fried for 8 hours long and thin pancake for wrapping is made in-house. Fresh scallions are from Yilan because they are the finest scallions in Taiwan.

Roast ducks is always sliced by the table for customers to see. The original way to eat it is “Crispy Skin & Duck Meat in Pancake”﹙NT$900﹚. With each additional way of serving it the surcharge will be NT$100. The basics are “Fried Shredded Duck with Bean Sprouts” and “Pickled Vegetables Duck Bone Soup”. The alternatives are “Deep-Fried Duck Bones” and “Fried Eggs with Duck Fat” which are an acquired taste for diehard duck lovers. The most raved is “Minced Duck in Lettuce”﹙surcharge NT$200﹚takes up at least 1/2 duck to stir fry with Chinese fried doughnut and then wraps all the goodies in a piece of big leafy lettuce. If you would like to try each method then you’ll need to order at least two whole ducks!

The first order of “Cold Shredded White Chinese Cabbage”﹙NT$150/small﹚is complimentary from the house. You’ll order another because it is everyone’s favorite appetizer. “Shredded Radish Cake”﹙NT$30/each﹚is covered in white sesame and when you take the first bite you’ll be surprised how juicy it is as if it’s a Chinese soup dumpling!

Street Public Art Turning Taipei into Spain

In the last 10 years the landscapes of Taipei have become more and more beautiful as time goes by. The past February “CowParade Taipei 2009” decorated the city with 107 cows in 13 most popular tourist attractions, from Taipei Zoo to National Palace Museum, Ximending to Xinyi Shopping District. These colorful public art works not only beautified the city of Taipei and provided artistic expression to it but also turned it into a giant art museum!

This year marks the 10th anniversary for CowParade. And 2009 also happens to be the year of Ox in Chinese Zodiac. This international public art festival is very diverse and encourages professional and amateur artists to create artwork. It goes to show that everyone can create artwork and shortens the distance between everyday people and artworks. In other words anyone can be an artist as long as he has creativity.

For several years now Street art in Taiwan has evolved and gone from public art to individual creative art. Street fairs sprang up all over Taiwan, from schools to communities, from art festivals to outdoor concerts. The number of attendees can range from a few hundred people to over 1,000. Going to street fairs has become increasingly popular and a new pastime in Taiwan. However, some street artists are tired of moving from one street fair to another like Nomads and decide to find a permanent location to set up a shop for their creative products. That way the customers will know where to find them and be able to shop in a comfortable and spacious environment. Currently there are too many street fairs in Taiwan. For those creative designers who can afford to open up their own studios or shops their design products are likely to be better quality. Therefore we’ll introduce a series of unique lifestyle brands. Our special thanks to Art and Lifestyle Association of Taiwan for assisting us during our search for innovative designers.

Mom’s Seamstress Skills Create One & Only Chic Fashionable Accessories

Big Yellow and Yellow are sisters. In their younger days they worked as street venders selling women’s clothing and accessories. When street fairs first sprang up they encouraged their mother, a former seamstress who used to work in a garment factory, to sew handmade bra straps﹙NT$190﹚by using colorful fabric to replace the ordinary traditional looking bra straps. While their business boomed they introduced their second product-women’s shoulder bag﹙small NT$1,680/large NT$1,980﹚made of artificial sofa leather. It was an overnight sensation because it possesses the style of the luxurious handbag at a fraction of the price. It’s such a hot item that even celebrity modals try to get their hands on it! The material is also lightweight and you won’t feel it on your shoulder while carrying it. You can choose your favorite color to make a bag. If you’re considered tall buy a large one, it will make you look slander!

Within six months Yellow Family set up two retail locations to promote their products. Originally just the two sisters and their mother were in the business together. Soon enough their cousin and their father also joined the family business. Their newest collection includes coin purse, cell phone case, makeup bag and women’s handbag. For all of the above you can chose your favorite patterns and colors to make a bag. You will never have to worry about running into someone with the same bag!

Six Good Friends Together Build A Dreamland Of Handmade Artworks

Six young designers met in street fairs and became close friends. They had one common goal-to collaborate in a retail store. The reasons are simple: 1. there is power in numbers and together they can appeal to a broad spectrum of clients; 2. they’re simply tired of being chased by the police. Last December they opened 7=1 and even though one of the seven designers got cold feet and backed out at the last minute. They insist on keeping the name, hoping that someday the 7th designer will come along and join 7=1.

On the day of the interview Mr. Lin Shi-chang who created Da Xi Tang was organizing clothes on the shelf, Eileen who set up iamsefs was sewing handmade bags at the open work station while Dada who’s in charge of Daladdda sat against the wall and chitchatted with them. When asked whether they spend everyday in the shop, Mr. Lin Shi-chang replied with a smile, “We’re always here. If not we’re on the way to street fairs somewhere.”

Lin Shi-chang majored in costume design when he was in school. Now he creates handmade T-shirts with Hakka floral pattern fabric﹙floral pattern NT$590/Double happiness characters NT$690﹚as well as tank tops﹙floral pattern NT$590/Double happiness characters NT$690﹚. His clothing is unisex and does come in small, medium and large sizes. For two years in a row he was a regular at the Red House Market selling his design and already had steady following. Originally his clothing was mainly in black and white and lately he’s crossed over to vibrant colors. In addition he works on improving the packaging by enclosing wash care instructions so that customers won’t have to worry about discoloration.

Eileen spent five years working as a 9 to 5 office worker. Her craftsmanship and high sensitivity with colors have turned YKK zippers to colorful pen bags, makeup bag, coin pouch, reusable chopsticks bags and more. The most hot-selling item is the multi-functioned bag, such as cell phone bag that comes with a pocket for battery and another pocket for EasyCard. Next time when your mobile is out of battery you won’t have to search everywhere looking for it. With quick access to EasyCard you can go in and out of MRT stations without looking for it. Eileen says, “Customers are welcome to come in and choose their favorite colors to make a bag. It’s best if they can specify what they will use the bag for and then I can design a multi-functioned and easy to use bag accordingly.”

It is purely accidental that Dada is now in the creative design business. With encouragement from Lin Shi-chang and Eileen she started Daladdda-a handmade jewelry brand. Dada calls her designs of necklaces and bracelets﹙ranging from NT$290 to NT$590﹚ “installation art” because she simply assembles different pieces together. She often goes to school markets and discovers that students are prone to favor her line of creative products. She randomly came up with a collection of Chinese Chess cell phone accessories ﹙NT$150 each﹚and now it’s selling like hot cakes!

In 7=1 there are three other creative brands-Lazy 20, Crazy Horsepower and Yellow Family. In fact this is the first retail location Yellow Family established before having a boutique store only for their designs.

Creative Space Hidden In Rock & Roll Hall

Art4pcom is a design company that provides retail channels for design products. The majority of the products are sold online and their website is like a virtual department store. In addition to online shopping there’s also an Art4pcom shop right next to the entrance to The Wall Live House. You’ll find more than 10 different design brands and T-shirts featuring rock bands that regularly perform at The Wall. Some music fans often rush into Art4pcom shop to look for T-shirts from their favorite bands to show their support!

In Art4pcom shop the most well known design brand is Foufou-a hand sketch rabbit with all kinds of facial expressions. This brand was founded in 2005 by a group of young amateur artists and the name Foufou is originated from a French word, meaning crazy people. Foufou’s design is cute and adorable with some dark humor. The mission of this brand is to offer people some light-hearted humor and make everyday life less boring. The latest innovative product from Foufou-the new & improved ID holder﹙NT$250﹚comes with a self-stabbing rabbit and its roaring look is amusing. This ID holder can be used to keep your company identification and EasyCard and you can also use it as a luggage tag when you travel abroad.

Dr. Evil is another dark-humor design brand. It aims to transform the good and noble fairytale characters into someone slightly evil. Dr. Evil has turned Snow White into an ill intentioned rocker style princess and Uncle D. from a well known fast food chain into a villain. Handmade Uncle D. villain notebook﹙NT$100﹚can be used as a sketch book or a pocket book when you need to jot something down quickly. When you run out of pages be sure to tear off the notebook cover and send it off as a postcard.

It seems like most of the design brands at Art4pcom shop are rebellious by nature. We wonder if it’s because the shop is adjacent to a rock and roll live house. Next time when you go to The Wall to show your support for the Taiwanese rock and roll music, please feel free to stop by Art4pcom shop to browse through some unique brands.

Four Professional Designers Launched Creative Brands That Represent
Taiwan Spirit

By joining Taiwan Graphic Design Association four well-established designers became friends. Ajue Wu, Martin Yang, Grace Shih and James Chen each run their own designing firms as their day job. Together they form a new brand MOART-“More” + “Art” + Chinese character “Mo”﹙means silence﹚=”HeiGou”﹙means black dog﹚. This brand’s mission statement is defined by the characteristics of energetic and loyal Taiwanese black dog and to them the true Taiwanese creative force comes from silence that speaks louder than words. Their slogan is design is a living attitude.

Ajue Wu was inspired by Chiang KaiShek Memorial Hall and created “Chiang’s Talk”. The brand specializes in exquisite gift designs that can best represent Taiwan and caters to foreign tourists. “FuGui Tea Cup Set”﹙NT$3,880﹚, a china set exported to Japan, is a delightful present that signifies Chinese traditional culture. The cups are designed to be shaped like a male and a female and each is imprinted with a Chinese character on the bottom. The male cup is written “Fu” which means wealth and “Gui” on the female cup signifies precious goods. “LaoZi Says Green Tea”﹙NT$500﹚is an export to Europe and currently is on sale at the famous Lafayette Department Store in France. It contains Taiwanese green tea, including TieGuanYin and JinBao Oolong.

Martin Yang established the brand D.Yang in 2007. He used Chinese ink and wash painting to portray three of the tallest buildings-Empire Building in New York, The Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur and Taipei 101 Building. He then transformed the paintings onto canvas ﹙NT$1,600 for one painting/NT$4,200 for all three﹚. Grace Shih introduces “uGuts” and “Show Me Wa”-two Taiwanese aboriginal brands and they incorporate aboriginal symbols onto necklaces, notebooks and coffee mugs. James Chen brings in “Yoga bobo” and this brand utilizes the basic 12 poses from yoga to design products. The most inquired-about products are skateboard﹙NT$950﹚and surfboard﹙NT$8,500﹚. Yoga bobo, dressed in white and bright orange, is any eye-catching symbol!

MOART was opened in late February, featuring 4 major design brands on display. These products represent the creativity of the four partners and gradually more products will be added to the shelves. These quality design products are not only Taiwanese creative cultures but also ideal souvenirs for foreign friends. For foreigners who currently reside in Taiwan these are perfect gift ideas. Before your next trip home you can come to MOART and shop for presents to give to your friends and family so that they’ll have a better understanding of your home away from home.

Support Original Designs and Cultivate Creative Cultures in Taiwan

In Taipei the readily available public art has shortened the distance between everyday people and fine art. As weekend street fairs become popular and often crowded it shows that creative designs that beautify our lives are easily accessible. We’ve guided you through a wide range of various design studios with different backgrounds. One has formed a family business thanks to Mom’s seamstress skills. One is a promising group project consist of ambitious young designers. There’s also a creative space combining music and design into one and professional designers who aim to take design products inspired by Taiwanese cultures to the world. Each and every one of them represents Taiwan creative art. Lately the street fairs are filled with counterfeit products and that has hard hit the designers. This infringement has violated copyright and will not stimulate the creative design industry. Please support original designs so that more and more Taiwan designers can participate in international competitions and show their talents abroad. The world will know that there is a lot more to Taiwan than just the high-tech industry!

Even though Homey’s Café just opened less than three months ago business is going well. Thanks to word of mouth and owner Homey’s good relationships with people. In addition Homey has accumulated substantial experiences in operating a restaurant over the years he does bring surprises every time he opens a new business. There are only 38 seats which may not seem much but you can choose to sit by the bar, on the balcony, on the couch or the indoor table & chair. Free wireless service is also available for customers. You may come in for coffee during the day and a drink or two after work. For those who would like to grab a quick bite while hanging out at Homey’s Café you have quite a few light meal choices, including sandwiches, salad, bagel, and rice & noodle dishes.

“Homey’s Bacon & Parma Ham Club Sandwiches”﹙NT$130﹚is delightful. Having bacon and parma ham sandwiches with potato chips plus a cup of cappuccino﹙Iced NT$120/Hot NT$100﹚is ideal for snacking in the afternoon.

Homey’s Café is famous for its homemade desserts. “Oreo Mascarpone”﹙NT$120﹚is ranked as the most popular among female customers. You can pair it with a pot of tea﹙herbal tea, Taiwanese specialty tea and organic black tea﹚ and enjoy a relaxing afternoon at Homey’s Café.

Homey renovated the second floor of this old apartment building and now it seems more spacious than the old structure and adequately ventilated. On a hot day it’s still cool inside and there is no need to turn on the air conditioner. If you sit by the balcony it’s very comfortable because there’s constant breeze coming through.

"Divalicious"

YAMAKIYA:Rounding Up Japanese Traditional Yakitori and Modern Creative Cuisine In One Place

“LanLin Theater 30th Anniversary. The Legend Lives On”:Bring Back Fond Memories & Revive the Glorious Days

This year marks the 30th anniversary for Lan-lin Theater. By popular demand theater group leader Mr. Jin Shi-jie, as known as Jin Bao in the theater community, decided to bring the classics such as “Cats' Paradise”, “Shamlet” and “HoChu's New Match” back on stage. Most of the original cast is in their mid-life now. The thought of seeing all of them together on stage and reviving the classic plays of Lan-lin Theater is extremely exciting for those diehard Lan-lin fans.

30 years ago Lan-lin Theater presented “Ho Chu’s New Match” and the box office was overwhelmingly successful. The audience would laugh hysterically at this foolish over-exaggerated comedy. When asked about his critically acclaimed play Mr. Jin is quite modest, “That was a different era then. People had no access to information and were rather repressed. All of a sudden something humorous came along and everyone was easily pleased. It didn’t take much to entertain and make people laugh!”

30 years later “Ho Chu’s New Match” will be brought back on stage. If you would like to catch the performance of the original cast – Hugh Lee, Mr. Lee Tien-zhu and Ms. Liu Ruo-yu, you’d better take an advantage of this reunion of the cast. Over the years they have mastered their acting skills and now are the elite of Taiwan theater community. Ms. Liu Ruo-yu, as the artistic director, has led U Theater to perform all over the world. Mr. Lee Tien-zhu is a well-respected and Golden Bell Award-winning actor. And Hugh Lee founded PingFong Acting Troupe and continues to entertain audience and keep them company.

Most original members of Lan-lin Theater are influential figures in the theater community. And Mr. Jin Shi-jie concludes that it is a positive growth for the development of Taiwan theaters and the audience. “If we continued to stay in the same theater group maybe there wouldn’t be Ping-fong Acting Troupe, If Kids Theater and U Theater. Since we are all working at different places and leading the next generation of actors forces us to improve our craftsmanship and to speed up the process. As a result we each developed our own performing style and philosophy.”

If you have seen Lan-lin’s play 30 years ago you definitely can’t miss this one! You’ll see the original cast back on stage and performing the play from 3 decades ago. They may have lost their youth but their charisma comes from years of experiences working in showbiz. They may have lost their good looks but a truly talented actor doesn’t need a pretty face to impress you. Instead a gifted artist understands that art imitates life and vice versa. Therefore acting is never pretentious but natural and effortless. Perhaps 30 years ago you missed out on the opportunity to catch Lan-lin Theater because you weren’t even born yet. Now is your chance to make up for lost time and witness the stage presence of these pioneer theater actors. Mr. Jin Shi-jie says with a smile, “Despite of having the original cast on stage you definitely can see differences in our play now and then. We present you this light-hearted comedy and bring back good old feelings and wonderful times. Also we would like to dedicate this to Dr. Wu Jing-ji for it’s his 70th birthday this year and express our gratitude. We’re grateful for what he did for Lan-lin Theater and planted the seeds for modern theater in Taiwan.

The anniversary programs for “Lan-lin Theater 30th Anniversary. The Legend Lives On” will go on for two months. Please go on Lan-lin Theater’s official blog http://www.wretch.cc/blog/lanlin1980for more details.

What I Do All Day

For someone who doesn’t hold a full-time job I’m awfully busy.

The minute I turn on my laptop and go online, I’m already at work. I kid you not. But I am glad to know that I’m the GO TO CHICK when my friends need a helping hand.

Liz says, “I want to have my farewell party at Taiwan Beer Factory. Can you call and make reservation for 20 people?”

Dave says, “I have to move out ASAP. Can you find me a place to stay?”

Sandra says, “Remember that outdoor café we walked by a few weekends ago? I’m thinking about going there. What’s the name of it?”

Paul says, “I have a gym membership but I need a workout buddy in order to be motivated. Can you find me a workout partner?”

Cassie says, “Can you take a look at this article? I need help with English to Chinese translation.”

Everest says, “Do we know anyone in Shanghai? A friend just moved there and is having a hard time. Can you hook him up with some local connections?”

Po says, “I’m stuck on this proposal. Can you come up with a list of music that’s related to Gothic culture?

Zeus says, “A friend just got into town and he’s looking for taro ice cream. Do you know where to find it?”

Fannie says, “I need to send out my CV soon. Can you translate my English CV to Chinese?”

Terry says, “I just saw a Sony TV on sale at your old job – the shopping network. Can you have it delivered to my house today?”

Vicki says, “Can you accompany me to the tailor shop? I need your opinions of the dress.”

Josh says, “I just came up with the new menu for our café. Can you take a look at it and come up with the English?”

Pamela says, “I’m broke and I need to pick up some private tutoring gigs. Know anybody?”
