In 1990 Taiwan had
little to offer if you were looking for luxury hotels. The Sherwood Taipei was
among the very few that was graced by world leaders, social elites and movie
stars; i.e. Lady Margaret Thatcher and former US President George H. W. Bush
just to name a few.
Personally I find The
Sherwood Taipei cozy and intimate each time I visit. And this recent afternoon
tea experience at TOSCANA was no exception. It was a sunny Friday afternoon and
I was meeting up with a girlfriend visiting from Shanghai. We asked for a table
by the window and our wish was granted with a bright smile. The service staff was
courteous and informative as each course was presented. First was the savory
plate followed by a plated dessert and ended with a prickly pear sorbet. The
tea menu features the exceptional tea by TWG.
Overall the
afternoon tea set is light and yet satisfying. The caviar on the savory plate
is generous and luxurious. The desserts are well balanced with acidity and rich
aroma. The highlight is the prickly pear sorbet decorated with mini macarons. It
is so radiant and colorful just like the spring bloom.
Unlike most afternoon
tea places TOSCANA is quiet and suitable for guests who prefer no disturbance from
noise, kids running around or screaming babies. When we were about to ask for
the check a loud bang broke the tranquility. A waitress accidentally dropped
the service tray and the manager immediately went around apologizing to the
customers one by one.
When the bill
finally arrived it was NT600 (+10% service charge). What a bargain! For the
same amount of money we could only afford two lousy cups of café latte in
Shanghai!
