The first Hainan
Chicken Rice I’ve enjoyed was at the Meritus Mandarin Hotel in Singapore. At the
first glance this dish offered no presentation. And magically this bowl of rice
served with cut up chicken produced such a mouth- watering aroma. No wonder
Hainan Chicken Rice was named #45 on World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods by CNN Go
a few years back.
During a recent
trip to Hainan Island, I couldn’t resist the temptation and had to find out
what it would taste like in its origin. The result was mediocre. The chicken
was a bit bland.
There are a handful
of restaurants serving Hainan Chicken Rice in Taiwan. I’ve only tried it at Au
Jardin which is a French bistro with Southeast Asian cuisine influence. The
chef is from Singapore and therefore he includes Hainan Chicken Rice as a
secret item, not an everyday menu. 3 days in advance booking is required. The
flavor is good and the portion is decent. It will set you back NT420 (+10%);
and it would have been nice if a bowl of chicken stock can be served to
accompany the meal.
