WE’RE THRIFTY FAMILY FROM NORTHERN TO SOUTHERN TAIWAN
Taiwan is a small island. I won’t dare to compare the difference between the North and the South. However, I’m sure that we’re all part of a big clan because from the poor to the rich we’re a thrifty family!
My friend K along with a few artists collaborated in an art exhibition. Since his family runs a restaurant business he offered to provide food & drink for the reception party. How little he knew about the consequences and witnessed what it’s like when grasshoppers attacked and wiped out the field!
The never-ending speeches made the partygoers anxious. They could smell the aroma of tonight’s feast and could see the buffet table from a distance. What upset them the most is that they couldn’t reach any of it! The crowd surrounded the buffet table as if they were warming up for the Olympics. They were ready to sprint toward the buffet. As soon as the party began, the crowd quickly quarantined the buffet area and cleaned up everything that’s edible. Within two minutes they were dismissed in an orderly fashion, leaving empty tables behind. My friend was shocked by how efficient the crowd was to wipe out all the food. Some could use just one fork to string up different varieties and eat it all at one time. The most amusing part was that some came in with their own doggy bags and intended to take home some goodies for snacks later.
Recently I organized a reception party for my sister’s recital and arranged a buffet of food & drink for the guests. I was in awe as men and women used their right hands to eat and their left hands to doggy-bag at the same time. I almost lost it and scolded at the mob, 「Where did you bandits come from?」It turned out that they’re my relatives.
A explained, 「The sandwiches are so delicious that I gotta have some for breakfast」
B begged, 「This chocolate smells so good that I gotta take home some! 」
My dear friends & family, may I remind you that frugality are a good virtue but you should wait until the party is over to doggy-bag leftovers, not during the party, okay? Have you been hit by the recession so hard that you have to fetch food elsewhere?
