One Nite In Taipei - Lady's Night



前兩天一位非常要好的已婚異性朋友到台北出差,當天是他的36歲生日,我為了盡地主之儀,找了幾個姐妹淘一起幫他慶生。我訂了老字號餐廳「談話頭」,自備一瓶紅酒,便到遠東飯店去接壽星吃晚餐。一頓豐盛的晚餐之後,我們到「MAYBE」喝酒唱歌跳舞,最後還帶他到「Carnegie’s」去朝聖台北最熱門的淑女之夜所在地。也許真的喝多了,在「Carnegie’s」待不到三分鐘,他緊拉著我的手,要我趕快帶他回飯店,因為他似乎快撐不下去。不知是否有人瞧見我們十指相扣,以最快的速度走回飯店,我的腦中出現一個念頭:如果他老婆看到這一幕會有啥想法?

一進飯店大廳,他執意要我趕回「Carnegie’s」到朋友身邊,但是我堅持送他回房間,一進門他便衝進廁所,我從外面聽,應該至少吐了四次以上。他滿臉歉意的說,他很不希望讓我看到他狼狽的樣子,事實上我沒有那麼介意的。協助他上床後,我坐在床邊,倒水給他,兩人開心的閒聊著今晚發生的人事物;我猜,自從結婚以後這應該是他第一次和這麼多個單身熟女一起出來玩到通宵,他應該已經很久沒有玩得這麼HIGH了!

距離我們上次見面大概已經有一個多月,其實每次他只要到台北出差,雖然只有過夜一晚,他都會約我下班後見面吃飯,每次想到我還蠻感動的。畢竟他已經是有婦之夫,女兒也快三歲,兒子再過兩個月也即將出世,已婚有家室的男人怎麼可以找單身熟女共度晚餐呢?今晚為他舉辦的生日趴,我不但找來一票女性朋友來做陪,而且還特別找單身熟女,他那不久要臨盆的老婆要是知道今晚所發生的一切是否會氣到把肚子裡的新生兒蹦出來?!

我的手機響了,姐妹淘一直在趕我回去找她們。喝醉的壽星看著我,那眼神似乎在對我說:「我多麼希望妳能待下來,但是我必須堅守對於妻子的承諾,趁我意志還堅定時趕緊離開吧!」

回到「Carnegie’s」,我和姐妹們開心的跳舞,不時有男人結伴過來與我們搭訕,但是我並不在乎他們。也許今晚喝到肚子裡的酒精終於開始在我身上發酵,當一個高瘦的白人男子走向我,趁我跳得正開心時一手摟住我的腰,我並沒有掙脫他,反而兩人就這樣黏在一起。和他一同出現的亞洲男子趁機和我的姐妹搭訕,兩人不時看著我和白人,有說有笑。就在此時,一位身穿全白的女性同胞用英文對我說:「My friend over there would like to have a word with your dance partner.」我順著她的右手指的方向,看到吧台有個女人左顧右盼的,眼神卻是往我這邊瞄過來。我笑著回答她說:「I’m going to the lady’s room. He’s all yours.」說完我就往洗手間走去。

事後我問白人男子,那女人到底對他說了什麼。只有一句話:「Can you take me home with you tonight?」

我很難相信看起來乖乖的小女生居然對著一個老外提出如此的要求,這需要莫大的勇氣!她心裡在想什麼?被拒絕之後她有難過嗎?

姐妹拉著與白人男子一同前來的亞洲男子到我身邊,說:「他有些話想要對妳說。」

在自我介紹之後,他有點羞澀的說:「I just want to tell you that you’re very hot and I like you a lot.」

對於這種來自陌生人的讚美,我只能很誠懇的回一句「thank you!」

白人男子再度出現在我眼前,「I’m leaving now. Would you like to come home with me?」一向聰慧敏捷的我,一時還不知該如何反應。他重覆了至少兩次,但是我似乎沒有什麼反應,他當機立斷的決定牽著我的手,兩手十指相扣,就從我的姐妹身邊、亞洲男子和那個被拒絕的女子面前經過,我們從容的走出大門並且跳上計程車。

回到他家,他立即衝進廁所,從門外聽起來他至少吐了四次。

到底是怎麼一回事,今晚遇到的男人酒量特別差!我最想知道有多少女性同胞在今晚的淑女之夜獵獲目標,嘗到甜頭!這時心中冒出那句話:計畫永遠趕不上變化!

昨天和好友Vanessa碰面,我們兩個熟女最近都有個共同的煩惱,那就是我們在職場打混多年,而工作領域需要接觸各行各業,曾經打個照面的人無計其數,如今我們不時在公眾場合被別人認出來,但是卻怎麼想都記不起對方的名字,實在是很尷尬。我在想,這是老化的前兆嗎?Vanessa說,這些年來我們工作太辛苦了,腦子早已裝滿了過去在職場上發生的人事物,如果有機會徹底放空,腦子就可以挪出多餘的空間。

上次放長假已經是去年十一月的事,也許下個月去美國住一段時間,吃吃喝喝、逛大街並且拜訪老朋友,拋開一切瑣碎雜事,讓自己好好充電一番!

No One Does Creative French Cuisine Better Than Louis ⅩⅠⅤ

On a weekday evening I walked into Louis ⅩⅠⅤ and surprisingly it was almost a full house. I looked at the time and realize that it wasn’t even six o’clock yet. I couldn’t help but wonder, “Is it a bit too early for dinner?” The regular patrons explained to me that it’s better to come early before all the goodies are sold out for the day. Each visit to Louis ⅩⅠⅤ is like a whole new experience. Chef Phoebe Wang constantly strives to present brilliant creations. The most popular dish of the week can be easily replaced by the newest creation next week. The menu is always changing like the speed of light. As for gourmet food lovers sometimes the best creations that Chef Phoebe has to offer are off the menu. You’d better build up special relationship with Chef Phoebe before having a chance to taste the real gem from her ever changing French cuisine.

Chef Phoebe is reputed to be the queen of sauces in her field. Her “Aioli” sauce is perfect to go with Scandinavian spiral shells and Australian prawns in Parisian Seafood Platter (1,800-3,200NT;Prices are adjusted according to the quantity of oysters). If you consider yourself an oyster fanatic, then you should try Special Gillardeau oysters from France. That way you’ll end up with one less regret in life. You can eat it fresh or add a few drops of red wine vinegar to spice up the taste and texture. I recommend that everyone should have at least one Special Gillardeau oyster in this lifetime. Delicacy like oyster makes life worth living for.

There have been more than 20 different desserts featured in Louis ⅩⅠⅤ over the years. But Tiramisu (380NT) has always been every patron’s number one favorite for desserts. The recipe is a secret and no one else can make it. Therefore when Chef Phoebe is out of town Tiramisu will be temporarily suspended from the menu. When I first laid eyes on tiramisu, I thought to myself, “There is no way that I’m going to share it with someone else. One order is one serving for one person!” I truly believe that while having delicious desserts people feel a sense of fulfillment and happiness.

China Pa:Jazz it up with the finest things in life

Upon arrival live jazz music brings smiles to everyone who just walks into China Pa. Men and women can’t help it but sing along as the music continue. Ever since China Pa opened a few years ago, it has become a symbol for gourmet cuisine, fine wine, cigar and jazz music and a meetinghouse for Taiwan’s elites.

Most music restaurants close on Mondays as sabbaticals due to slow business. Come into China Pa on any given Monday there are businessmen entertaining their clients with fine wine, modern ladies wine and dine during girl talks, and love birds who share a romantic dinner while they hold hands. After dinner most people wait patiently for the live music session starting at 9:30. As the lead singer kicks off the first set everyone is immersed into jazz music, feeling satisfied and wanting for more! Many request songs from their eras and the jazz band never let them down. From 9:30 to 11:30 on weekday nights the house band will perform two sets of 45 minutes live jazz music. On the weekends live music session begins at 9:30 and ends at 12:30 with three sets scheduled throughout the live session. Recently Shanghai old school jazz was introduced and ever since Wednesday becomes the most popular night of the week! 1930 big band jazz along with swing jazz bring back nostalgic memories of the old Shanghai. Everyone follows the rhythms and sings their heart out!

Aside from jazz music China Pa offers the essence from every Chinese cuisine. You can stay put in Taiwan but satisfy your taste bud with various delicacies from every corner in China. For those who desire fine cuisine without the extra calorie white yam tomato roll with Japanese sauce (260NT) is your most fitting choice this summer. Ingredients are fresh and low in calorie; tomatoes wrapped in white yam are crisp and once you start you won’t be able to stop until the plate is empty. Meat lovers’ must-have is grilled ribs with Taiwanese style pesto (560NT). Two types of dipping sauces are available: sea salt and Taiwanese pesto. De-boned and sliced ribs are easily shared among friends. I used to loathe a dish called Pineapple with prawns but China Pa revamped the dish. Now it’s called Prawns in wasabi mayonnaise (460NT) and I learn that not all prawns are served with grease. In fact wasabi adds more flavors to prawns, giving it a tinge of refreshing taste.

Jazz music tends to go well with drinking. China Pa created specialty cocktails according to certain events took place in Chinese history. Tale of the Forbidden City (380NT) is made of whisky, kahlua, cocoa black and OJ, served in antique red china porcelain and placed in a small wooden concubine lounge chair. In ancient China women were not allowed to sip wine until the men said so. In modern times independent women can treat themselves to a few bottles of Tales of the Forbidden City with or without men.

As for modern men who will never have the chance to become emperor Farewell my concubine (620NT) is designed for the manliest of all. Vodka, Bacardi 151, Kahlua, Midori and passion liquor are layered like a rainbow in one large shot glass. Seasonal fruits are served with this drink but I must warn you that Farewell my concubine is meant for modern men who possess class and sophistication!

China Pa is ready to celebrate its anniversary in September. The big party is scheduled for September 10th along with this year’s theme: Taiwanese aboriginal culture. The program includes Bunun tribe famous ritual pasibutbut (praying for good harvest) and aboriginal shaman’s ritual for blessings. The party food will feature aboriginal delicacies and you can expect to taste rice wine in most dishes to give you a nice buzz. 10 years ago Leo Lee had the privilege to work with one of the best steak houses in Taiwan. This year Leo combined his talent in interior design and his knowledge in restaurant business and established Savory Restaurant. On the cover of the menu, it reads, “this management is based on three hands – two hands for cooking and one hand for conscientiousness.” Leo truly expects to give every customer a brand new experience upon each visit and provides quality cuisine that’s worth every dollar spent!

There are many steak houses in Taiwan but few have distinctive characteristics. If you browse through menus from various steak houses, you’d wonder one person designed all of them. Savory’s house special, Savory net grilled US prime rib (780NT), is charbroiled with secret recipes. It’s crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. To spice up your steak, you may ask for Pepper sauce (black+red+white pepper), red wine sauce or Japanese green sauce (wasabi). German knuckle (580NT) is a popular request among those health-conscious customers. Instead of deep-fry knuckles, it takes 45 minutes to pan-fry it followed by roasting, making this dish a healthy choice. Leo believes in giving the customers what they wish for. You may choose Set A by adding 100NT and soup or salad plus one drink will be served. If you have a healthy appetite, Set B ﹙200NT extra﹚includes appetizer, bread, soup and salad followed by a drink and dessert after meal.

Weekday lunch special is a steal, ranging between 240NT and 360NT. The set is completed with a main dish plus soup, salad and one drink. In the near future Savory will launch its afternoon tea set. In the meantime, I can’t help thinking about Savory beef short rib (680NT). Just the thought of it makes my mouth water. I’ve got to rush over to Savory for a steak feast!

十年前因緣際會踏入餐飲業,李家豪很幸運的進入台灣頂尖的西餐廳學習。今年他自立門戶,將自己的老本行室內設計和餐飲結合,於四月開幕的喬森西餐是他的心血結晶。在菜單封面上寫著:「經營理念本著三隻手 — 兩隻手作菜還有一隻手摸著良心!」李家豪希望上門的客人都能吃到貨真價實的手工菜,每一次用餐經驗都是深刻而與眾不同!

台灣的牛排館林立,但是有特色的不多,撇開店名,菜單翻開來彷彿是同一個人設計的。喬森西餐的招牌網燒牛排﹙780元﹚,獨家配方調理再加上炭烤之後,外皮薄脆但咬到嘴裡是鮮嫩帶有嚼勁,口感直逼松阪和牛。喜好牛排沾醬吃的可以請服務生送上三椒醬﹙黑胡椒+白胡椒+紅胡椒﹚、紅酒醬或是和風青醬﹙日本芥末﹚,讓吃牛排成為一種樂趣!德國豬腳﹙580元﹚也是熟客的最愛之一,不採用油炸而是較費工的手續—先煎再烤,是體恤現代消費者對於健康的堅持。單點主菜之餘,可以配上A套餐,多加100元,選擇湯或沙拉和飲料;胃口好的搭配B套餐更划算,多加200元,不但有特選開胃菜、麵包、湯和沙拉,飯後有甜點和飲料。

商業午餐的價位非常實在,介於240元至360元間,主菜加上湯、沙拉和飲料;不久的將來,喬森西餐也會推出下午茶。一想到台塑牛小排﹙680元﹚,馬上口水直流,趕緊到喬森西餐報到!

English Summer Night in Taipei






Last night I was invited to a private party held by Hendrick's Gin. The drinks were delicious! Bartender Aki is truly a genius! He created five cocktails for Hendrick's Gin and my favorite was Hendrick's Mandarin Pear Cobbler.

The event organizer arranged two street artists to draw sketches for party guests. I'm very pleased with the caricature!

男人在想啥?

女人花上一生的時間在鑽研男人的心,殊不知他們的心智有時候簡單的令人難以置信。

當被問到為什麼講到泡妞,聊天的對象不同就會有令人意想不到的內容,例如和我們一群死黨在一起時,表現的有些靦腆;但是和同性朋友出門就一副老子很行的樣子!乾弟說: 【哈哈~有時候我泡妹妹,一半也是為了製造「笑果」!妳也知道,就是一群哥兒們在一起看到正妹會有的反應跟樣子!但是如果我是獨自一人在路上遇到心儀的對象,那去搭訕的動機就比較純粹囉。】

而男人究竟是如何一見鍾情的,乾弟也有故事可以分享。

話說,昨天在電梯裡遇到一個讓我想要一輩子定下來的超氣質美女,在2F到4F之間,短暫交談了幾秒..............可惜,她在4樓出來,等我回神從6樓下去4樓找她的時候,已經找不到人了...

所以,真愛可以在瞬間發生,電梯邂逅也可能造就天長地久的愛情,但是手腳太慢的就啥都沒有啦!

態度

過去兩年我們看到很多和運動有關的台灣紀錄片,從「翻滾吧男孩」到「奇蹟的夏天」到今年在台北電影節首映的「野球孩子」到即將在七月十七日上檔的「態度」,除了強調運動家精神之外,最重要的是要傳達在每個競賽的背後都藏有反敗為勝的機會,就是時下流行的「逆轉勝」。

然而紀錄片最大的困難在於,這就是真實人生,計畫永遠趕不上變化,因為沒有劇本所以也不能鋪梗,也無法去特別安排橋段。一切都是未知數,那麼如果期待中的「逆轉勝」沒有發生時,這時候要怎麼辦?

從第一次看到這個片名,我就對這部有關台灣啤酒籃球隊的紀錄片產生好奇心。海報上寫著:「你的態度決定你的夢想」,態度對於打球和人生到底有多重要?歷時兩年的紀錄,從台啤籃球隊球員們到紀錄片工作小組,這些七年級生證明年輕就是實力,他們的態度讓夢想實現,而態度不見得能夠保證永遠的勝利,但絕對是成敗最關鍵的因素!無論是面臨失敗或是成功,態度決定未來的路要如何走下去!

今天有幸參加「態度」在信義威秀的媒體試片,黑人站在門口很親切的問候每一個入場的記者,那是一種誠懇的態度,讓人很舒服。我隨著八十分鐘的紀錄片開心大笑,也有幾次是跟著偷偷落淚。在今天之前,我沒有關心過SBL的球賽;但是自今天起,看到SBL和台啤籃球隊的消息,我就會想到「態度」中在積極練球的球員、球賽中受傷的球員、因為要讓家人過得更好而努力打拼的球員,在冠軍獎座的背後,有多少不為人知的辛苦和心酸,你都可以在「態度」找到答案。讓我最佩服的是,他們不會因為輸球而氣極敗壞,或是在得到夢寐以求的冠軍就恃寵而驕,這樣的態度真的很難得!

之前對於台灣啤酒籃球隊的球員,我只知道何守正和陳建州,對於他們的印象僅限於從媒體報章雜誌得知的八卦緋聞;倒是有一次帶白歆惠和阮經天參加一個義賣園遊會時,幾個台啤球員排在我們之後登台,那天報紙頭條寫的是何守正和張惠妹談戀愛的新聞,看到何守正時我心裡的OS:「哇,怎麼可以長如此高,不知道小時候何媽媽都餵他吃什麼才長這麼高的啊!」在「態度」中,我們可以看到何守正對於父母的重視,而他的孝順鮮少受到媒體的注意,親情在這個外型出色的大男孩生命中是排第一順位。我猜,與何守正相差十歲的張惠妹也是欣賞他的孝心吧!

也許是拘限於預算,「態度」的畫面品質稍微差了些,現場收音的效果不盡理想,但是對於第一次當監製的陳建州和首次執導演筒的林家緯和廖人帥,這樣的成績已經是相當不錯了;也許正因如此,有獨立片商願意協助讓「態度」能夠在院線發行,最後到底成績會是如何,我們拭目以待。不需要熱愛籃球或是SBL,「態度」讓你看到優秀運動家的內心深處!喜歡台啤籃球隊的粉絲一定要看「態度」,因為這是他們最真誠的一面和成功背後的奮鬥史!

Long Hair vs. Short Bob Haircut

For those who have known me since college you have witnessed some major changes in my life. One of the most talked about subjects is my long hair. Some say that they love my long silky hair but some adore the short bob haircut. The debate goes on. One day I present the question of LONG HAIR VS. SHORT BOB HAIRCUT to my dear friend Tom who is one of my biggest supporters.

Tom says: I can't speak for the others but I'll try to explain my feelings.

I have always thought you were very hot but since I have known you, you have grown into an incredible woman, accent on the woman. I love your intelligence, your sense of humor, your perceptiveness, your compassion, your bitchiness (not usually toward me), and your principles. All of that, to me, is very exciting and very sexy! Or maybe you just show a lot of cleavage in your pictures and ...just kidding!

Let's see, about the hair - loved it long, really love it short, but I and I'll probably be the exception here, I think I like the in between the best! That could be because that was how it was cut when I first saw you after a long time!

Maybe: the Last Oasis in Taipei for Rock & Roll Fanatics!

Three years ago Bruce along with a few good friends took over a storefront and turned it into what’s now called Maybe. Bruce had dreamed about opening his own lounge bar when he was only a college student. His dream did come true and Maybe was born to be a simple, easygoing, and down-to-earth hangout joint. Whether you put your best looking suit or walk in with casual flip flops, you can always feel at ease while listening to rock & roll music from all around the world. You can sit back, relax and enjoy the rock & roll marathon or get up and sing your heart out!

Every lounge bar has a designated DJ to be in charge of the music. At Maybe Bruce is the commander at the music station and he can take your request as long as you follow the simple rules: 1. No Mandarin and Taiwanese music; 2. No Hip Hop and techno music. If you are interested in learning about the basics in rock & roll music and the classic tunes, come hang out at Maybe and listen to the music festival that goes on all night long. You can enjoy a few drinks and be baptized by rock & roll. There is no need to worry about those shower singers. Bruce will ask them nicely to give up the microphone and buy them a round of drinks before the tragic happens.

Maybe attracts many rock & roll fanatics and most of them are society elite between the age of 25 to 40. Bruce shares an interesting insight into the social problem of modern people. After graduation most people have difficulties making new friends. When they meet those who love rock & roll as much as they do, an active social group was born. Hence Maybe becomes more than a rock & roll heaven, it is also a place where friends with common interest can have a good time.

Maybe was highly recommended by a friend and she insisted to show me the place. My first time at Maybe was for her 40th birthday. It was a very special birthday celebration and the birthday cake was made of sticky rice shaped like a bikini bathing suit with two candles on it! And it was also my first time trying Maybe’s signature drink: Baby sleeps for three days (350NT). Nine types hard liquor were mixed into one drink and the portion was more than generous. When you finish it, you feel like as if your dull life suddenly becomes colorful again! This signature drink is so popular that the best record so far was 100 orders in one night. That means every patron had at least one Baby sleeps for three days because the capacity at Maybe can only allow 80 people the most.

The night I stopped by Maybe to interview the owner Bruce was Maybe’s 3rd anniversary. Every year Bruce goes out of his way to celebrate the anniversary and this year was no exception. For their 3rd anniversary a cross-dressing party was in order and when Bruce appeared all eyes were on him. Among all the acts imitating the legendary female singer Tiger Huang Bruce is the best looking man of all.

There are themed parties and special events throughout the year at Maybe. And the most unique event has to be the talent show, just like the trendy talent TV search program where customers can demonstrate their singing skills and face the cruel commentary from the acting jury members or take a challenge to guess the title of the song by listening to bits of the prelude.

Maybe is like one big family and every member is passionate about rock & roll. And they all tell me that Maybe’s signature fries (180NT) is the best home-cooking there is in the city of Taipei. And Maybe’s beef noodle (260NT) comes from an ancient family secret and it is off-limits to those non-family members. You’d better come join Maybe before full house.

三年前布魯斯和幾個志同道合的朋友接下現在Maybe的店址,他的想法很單純,希望能夠實現大學時期的夢想,那就是開一家以搖滾樂為特色的夜店,簡單、隨和、無論是穿人字拖鞋或是燕尾服的,都能自在的走入Maybe,聽到喜歡的國內外搖滾樂,和其他搖滾樂迷一起聽音樂,甚至大聲的唱出來。

每家夜店都有負責放音樂的DJ,在Maybe布魯斯都是自己擔任DJ,而且還準備兩隻麥克風讓客人一起唱,想要點歌必須遵守布魯斯的原則:不接受國台語歌曲、電音和嘻哈音樂。如果對於搖滾樂有興趣的朋友,不妨來Maybe聽音樂,因為布魯斯會播放國內外的入門和經典搖滾樂,讓你小酌之餘還可以接受搖滾樂的洗禮!不過,如果遇到歌藝不佳卻巴著麥克風不放的客人,布魯斯會大方的請對方喝酒,阻止悲劇繼續發生。

Maybe吸引非常多熱愛搖滾樂的男男女女上門,年齡分布是25至40歲的社會中堅份子,布魯斯發現一個有趣的現象,這年頭似乎大家進入社會工作之後就很難交到朋友,很多志同道合的客人在Maybe認識之後,自成一個社交團體,當他們相約來Maybe,不再是為了聽搖滾樂,而是和擁有共同興趣的朋友一起分享快樂時光!

第一次去Maybe是去參加朋友的四十大壽,壽星不斷的和我推荐這家店,當晚店家準備一個很特別的慶生方式,送給壽星一個用油飯做成比基尼形狀、上面還插著兩根蠟燭的另類生日蛋糕!那晚喝到Maybe最為大家津津樂道的招牌調酒:寶貝睡三天﹙350元﹚。九種不同的烈酒調配而成,而且份量十足,500cc下肚之後,黑白的人生頓時變彩色的!這杯調酒曾經在一晚賣出將近百杯,表示當晚每位客人都點了至少一杯,因為客滿的Maybe也不過才八十個席次!

安排採訪的當晚是Maybe的週年慶,每年都有不同的慶生方式,今年邀請來賓變裝反串,男扮女裝,女扮男裝,布魯斯一出場大家一致拍手叫好,因為他應該是所有反串過黃小琥的男人中,長得最好看的!Maybe不定期會舉辦節慶主題派對,也會模仿時下流行的歌唱比賽,讓客人登台展現歌喉並面對現場評審團的評論,或是挑戰聽音樂前奏猜歌名的遊戲。
