Beauty Is Only Skin-Deep

No Such A Thing As Ugly Women

Men have NO IDEA what women have to go through in order to look good. Keeping an impeccable exterior is not as easy as it may seem and it does not happen overnight.

I wonder if men’s little understanding in women’s beauty regimen has anything to do with the fact that they do so little in beautifying their appearance.

Aside from keeping a regular fitness program and healthy eating habits, a woman needs to endure treatments from head to toe if she wants to look beautiful as she can be. When I say “treatments”, I don’t necessarily mean “indulgence.” Just think about ‘waxing’ for a second. That is pure pain.

Some say that there are no ugly women, only lazy women. Definitely some truth to that. I often hear my guy friends complain about their girlfriends not taking better cares of their skin or hair or feet or body. They have good intensions. When I see their girlfriends, I immediately understand why the little imperfections bother them

When I go out, I like to check out other people’s hair. It drives me crazy to see women with long hair that is DRY, COARSE, or FUZZY. The worst scenario is probably longhair with disastrous split-ends. I have the urge to go up to that person and beg her to get a cut. I wish she would do so ASAP. Otherwise, I’ll hunt her down and do the honor myself. Just kidding! However, this is what goes through my mind when I see someone with terrible split-ends.

On the other hand, I am an advocate of women’s rights. One of them is You work toward a better self for YOURSELF and nobody else. Your clothes begin to fit you just a little too tight and you decide to implement a workout regimen. That is great and honey, more power to you! I won’t advise any girl to start working out only because her boyfriend wants her to lose a few pounds.

The stern truth is that women are competitive against each other. We cannot stand it when there are women who look better than we do, especially when we think they don’t deserve to look as good as the way they do. The drive to outshine other women is greater than the drive to please the men.

Maintaining a polished appearance is not rocket science but the rigorous regimen is painstaking, time-consuming, and it can become expensive when all things add up. Allow me to explain what it takes a woman to get the works.

Body

1. Releasing Toxins

We live in a fast-paced world. Everything has to be quick, including taking a shower. It is wonderful to treat yourself to a nice long hot bath before bedtime. Just add some sea salt to your bath water or put a few drops of essential oils. While you soak in your bathtub for relaxation, your body begins to release toxins from within and melt your stress away.

2. Exfoliate

Once a week, exfoliation for the entire body is necessary. I especially like to mix body scrub and milk. Yes, MILK! You might be lactose intolerance but you still can cleanse you skin with milk. People always have milk that’s about to go bad in the fridge. Don’t toss it out and save it for your next exfoliation session.

You can use a loofah to exfoliate your body for best results. Knees and elbows will need a few extra scrubs in order to get rid of the dead skin cells.

3. Moisture

First, you grease up the entire body with some scented body oil. That’s the first layer. For the second layer, you apply body lotion – do not miss a spot and make sure you rub body lotion ALL OVER YOURSELF. People tend to miss spots like ankles and neck. Finally yet importantly, you use a puff to dab body powder to finish it off the moisturizing process.

4. Remove Unwanted Bodily Hair

Waxing can be painful to first time users. It needs to be performed on a regular basis depending on how fast your hair grows. Waxing is for your eyebrows, lips, arms & legs, underarms, and your bikini area. If you have all the areas done in one setting, you’ll have a lot of pain to endure. Some areas need to be waxed more often than the rest. In 1992, I had my first eyebrow wax and I was crying like a baby! It hurt. Nobody told me it was going to be painful. My friends kept telling me how a magical eyebrow waxing would give my face a new look and make my eyes appear larger. Despite the painful experience, I became hooked on it ever since.

Face

1. Cleanse

I know women who spend up to an hour to get their makeup done perfectly but they are so lazy to take it off before hitting the sack. That is so bad for your skin when you sleep with makeup on overnight!!!

Once a week you also need a deep-pore cleansing in order to get all the dirt out of your pores; and an facial exfoliation can polish off the dead skin cells and bring back radiance. Your face will have a beautiful glow after all this. While you are at it, don’t forget to exfoliate your lips as well. Lips often suffer from dryness and overexposure to wind and the sun. A toothbrush will do some wonders for your chapped lips.

2. Moisture

For daytime, you need to apply a thin layer of facial lotion and then sun block lotion. Before bedtime, pat some night cream all over your face and let the skin absorb the nutrient while you sleep. You can also apply eye cream if you have puffy eyes, wrinkles or dark circles around your eyes.

3. Facial

Everyone loves going to a day spa for facial treatments. Who doesn’t love being pampered? You feel like a million bucks after the treatment is finished. The monetary issue does not allow me to indulge freely. If you’re just like me, you should do facials at home. I try to do it daily and I must admit that I do notice the difference on my skin when I give myself indulgent facial masks diligently. I know what you are thinking, “I wish I had the time to indulge a daily facial at home!” The truth is YOU DO. You simply put on a facial mask and read your book, gossip magazines, or newspaper. You can do it when you apply to personal Emails at home. 20 minutes is all you need.

4. For Eye Lashes

Some people dye their lashes. Some perm them to save the problem of using a curler - I still don’t know how to use it properly! Permed eyelashes look perky!

Hands & Feet

I’m a hand lotion freak. I have hand lotion EVERYWHERE – in my purse, in my car’s compartment, on my desk, in the kitchen, by the sink in the mini-bar, on the headboard, in the living room, next to the house phone, and everywhere else. I can always use a few drops of hand lotion. It is at all corners around the house so that it’s always available when my hands need some hydration.

Once a week, I exfoliate my hands with a bath sponge and scrape the callus away with pumice. Usually, I include the hands and feet during body exfoliation. Whenever I feel my hands are chapped, I take care of it right away. I cannot stand rough spots or dead skin cells on my hands.

If you can afford it, you should hit the nail salon for a weekly manicure and twice a month pedicures. Your cuticles are always perfectly clipped when you have professional manicures and pedicures. It just feels so good! Your nails will look nice and clean.

I had a boyfriend in college who would have his nails done, too. We used to go to the nail salon together. I was sure that I was one lucky girl whose boyfriend would do something like manicure and pedicure with me. After we broke up, the salon owner told me about the other girl who also came in with him to get her nails done.

If budget is a concern, you can always do your own manicure and pedicure at home. I often multi-task by doing my own nails while watching TV.

Before bedtime, it’s good to apply cuticle oil around the cuticles and massage your hands and feet with some thick cream. You can nourish them during sleep.

A friend told me once that he was turned off when his girlfriend wore one nail polish colors on her toenails and another for her fingernails. Is it that bad? I also know men who wish their girlfriends would match their bras and panties. I guess it’s all about men’s viewing pleasures. I don’ see girls complain when their guy wears the K-Mart underpants. Men should get real and stop expecting every woman to look like the models in the catalog of Victoria’s Secret.

Hair

I take special cares of my long hair. My hair has been long for 10 years now. I have invested lots of time and money to keep it looking healthy and shiny.

I baby my hair. I baby my hair so much that I lay it on the pillow when I go to sleep. I don’t toss but I turn a lot. What happens when I have to turn from side to side? Apparently, I have a habit during my beauty sleep that I was not aware. I literally sit up, hold my hair in one hand, turn to the other side, lay it on the pillow and then go back to sleep. The sequence is done with my eyes closed. Imagine if you are sleeping next to me. In the middle of the night, you see me doing all that with my eyes shut. That’s a little scary!

In addition, you need to get a regular trim every three months and more often if you wear your hair short.

If you have highlights, you need to go back to the salon for regular touchups. If your hair is dyed, you have to dye the roots when they begin to show or re-do the process again. If you perm your hair, you have to make appointments to see your hairdresser as soon as the curls start looking slightly relaxed.

Hair dye is extremely damaging to your hair. That’s why there are all sorts of treatments available. Some can make your hair look shiny; some can take away the fuzziness. One treatment can even release the toxins in your hair due to styling products and chemicals from hair dye.

Did I Miss Anything?

I feel like I just finished writing The Beauty Tips for Dummies. It is nearly impossible to remember every little detail in the regimen. It is hard work if a woman wants to look perfect on the outside. I know I’m not done with this list yet and I’m positive that I am missing a thing or two. Let me know if you have something to add to the regimen.

Boys, hear me out. Instead of complaining about the mismatched toe nail polish and the fingernail color, look at your own ugly toenails first. You should try to appreciate the effort that your woman has put into improving her appearance and compliment her with flattering words.

Bill Cosby says, “I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.”

Girls, beauty is only skin-deep. What is on the inside matters. It’s about knowing who you are and knowing what you are worth. My sincere advice is only doing the beauty regimen that is pleasant to you and skips the stuff you do not enjoy.

If a man cannot appreciate what you have to offer, tell him to go to hell. If he makes fun of any of your body parts, tell him to take a good look at himself in the mirror before opening his mouth again.

Your package is only complete when you combine your exterior with your self-confidence. There is nothing sexier than a beautiful confident woman!
