As we often see on Facebook relationship status is stated as “IT’S COMPLICATED.” In deed love is complicated. How complicated? That’s see what Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin have to say. All three are excellent actors with years of experiences on the silver screen. When you see the trailer of the trio, you probably have guessed it. Yes it’s about over the hill people having complicated relationship issues. To make the long story short Jane and Jake reignite their flame of love after divorcing each other for 10 years. That’s not exactly good news because a decade later their kids are still dealing with the bitter divorce. And Jake is married to a younger woman whose five-year-old son is a pain in the neck. Jane goes from the legitimate wife, to an ex and now the mistress. On top of all this Jane finds herself drawn to her architect Adam.
It’s not often we see films that depict the love life of people over the age of 50. And the truth is that when people grow into old age they face different kinds of relationship problems. Director Nancy Meyers apparently incorporates some of her own life experience into the script. Perhaps that’s why this film is believable and convincing. I’ve always liked Nancy Meyers’ films and the way she portrays real life relationship issues through her work. Even though I have never been married or divorced, nor I have kids, I can relate to the issue of getting back together with an ex. Just seeing the part where Jane and Jake hooking up again after 10 years reminds me the time when I hooked up with my ex 4 years after breaking up with him. It was a messy breakup and he wouldn’t talk to me for years. But the night when we’re back together that old feeling was coming back. Unlike being with someone new it takes time to get to know each other. With my ex I just fell back into that comfort zone again and forgot why we broke up at the first place. It almost seemed like the second time around we’ll do better as a couple. He’s familiar with everything about me and he knew exactly what I’m all about and how to be with me. And that felt great! For a single woman sometimes it does get tiring to repeat the same thing about myself and my life again and again as I go on new dates. I feel like a broken record. I know all about the ‘ex’ factor in Jane’s dilemma!
IT’S COMPLICATED is definitely aimed for audience who are at least 30 and older. Have you been around the dating scene long enough to have a few breakups under your wing? You’re the targeted audience! Of course Meryl Streep is great in every role that she’s been in. I’ve always liked Alec Baldwin. He’s my favorite out of all the Baldwin’s brothers. He might be old now and kind of a “big guy”. I just love his charisma and maybe the chest hair too! By the way when Alec Baldwin appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman he claimed that he had a body double for his nude scene. As for Steve Martin this is probably the first time I’ve seen him in a calmer role as his previous performances were rather over the top mostly. Casting is crucial in this film as all three actors are over the age of 60 and they certainly look their age on screen! And it’s still a beautiful thing!
