On Public Transportation In San Francisco

When I’m back in San Francisco I often take public transportation to go to places. And you’ll be surprised what you see while riding the bus / train / subway with the masses.

Wednesday night I was expected to be in Oakland and decided to board BART at Civic Center. After I purchased my ticket from the machine a man in his late 30s stopped me right before I had a chance to walk toward the entrance.

“I’m sorry to bother you,” he had a BART ticket in his hand, “can you please lend me 75 cents?”

He wore glasses and dressed in clean clothes but looked frightened. Normally I would just walk away. For some odd reason I reached for my wallet and handed him a dollar bill.

“Be safe & good luck!” I said him as I walked away.

Not until I got on BART and had a moment to myself, a thought came to my mind. He could have robbed me right there since there was no one around. The idea startled me. Everyone I know who lives in San Francisco tells me that the crime rate in the city has gone up and it’s not as safe as it used to be. This is exactly the situation that they would warn me about – DO NOT OPEN YOUR WALLET IN FRONT OF A STRANGER, ESPECIALLY NOT IN THE PRESENCE OF A PANHANDLER.

Today I took the bus to go to downtown. I tried to swipe my translink card. After a few attempts the screen showed only one thing and it said “Blocked Card. The bus driver leaned over to take a look at the screen. He shrugged his shoulder and said, “I don’t know what it means. Just go ahead and sit down.”

He just saved me $1.50 for bus fare. The fare will be increased to $2 per person starting July 1st.

A few minutes later an African American got on the bus. It seemed like he was trying to sneak in along with other passengers. Unfortunately it didn’t work and the bus driver called him out, “$1.50 please.”

The man searched for his bus transfer in his torn duffle bag but nothing turned up. He said to the bus driver, “I have it somewhere.” He reached for his pants pockets and still nothing.

“If you ain’t got $1.50, give me whatever you’ve got. Coins will do. I can’t let you ride for free.” He just stood there next to the bus driver, looking hopeless and helpless.

Suddenly an Asian-looking old man, napping on the seat, reached for his pocket, grabbed 5 or 6 different coins consisted of quarters and dimes, and handed it the black guy.

No words were spoken but just an exchange of eye contacts. As the black guy walked toward the back of the bus he turned around and said, “Thank you so much Sir. I truly appreciated it. Thank you!” He was humble and polite.

The old man didn’t even look up or nod his head. His eyes remained closed until he got off the bus.

In Asia we’re constantly reminded that we have to yield seats to the elderly. On the bus and subways there are always signs asking people to give up seats for seniors, pregnant women and children. In San Francisco I often see young people watch old people get on the bus and remain still on the seats. They won’t even pretend to get up from their seats. I don’t know why it bothers me so much when it happens right in front of my eyes.

In San Francisco you can always identify tourists on the bus, streetcars, trains and BART because they all have a folded map or guidebook in their hands. Often tourists get on the bus and ask the bus driver for directions. Rarely seen a bus driver is willing to help; and I find myself giving directions to visitors all the time.

Human interactions can be so inhuman sometimes and yet there are still people who do care. Be a man and do the right thing.

Cafe Latte at The Grove on Chestnut Street

During my college days I used to live on Chestnut Street and I would walk over to the Grove and study or work on my laptop. I've met quite a few guys here and went on dates. One became a serious boyfriend for 2+ years.

The Grove is my comfort zone in the Marina, San Francisco.

Partying at Matrix Fillmore

AT &T Park - San Francisco Giants vs. Oakland Athletics

It was a great day at the ballpark - and the Giants won!

"Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack,
I don't care if I never get back,

Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game."

Premium Outlet Shopping

Some people speed walk; some people speed date; and I speed shop because I love shopping, especially premium outlet shopping.

The day before I drove 2 hours to Woodbury Common Premium Outlets I mapped out my routes and came up with a list of my Must See Stores and Secondary Stores If Time Allowed. I spent a total of 5 hours shopping and never took a break to eat or drink. And I only took 2 bathroom breaks.

Let me give you some ideas where I did speed shopping:

Bebe
Burberry
Diesel
Celine
Bottega Veneta
Calvin Klein
Emilio Pucci
BCBG
Dior
Dolce & Gabbana
Fendi
Hugo Boss
Prada
A/X
Salvatore Ferragamo
Versace
Gucci
Bally
Jimmy Choo
Tod’s
Chanel
Converse
Roberto Cavalli
True Religion
Valentino
YSL
Giuseppe Zanotti
Furla
Tumi
Guess
Lacoste
Gap
Banana Republic
Theory
Michael Kors

I’m very proud of myself for such accomplishments. Let me know if you ever need assistance in mapping out your outlet shopping routes. I’m all about efficiency and getting what you want for the lowest price possible! Hooray to outlet shopping!

Feeling Small...

I left Taiwan on Friday, June 5th for San Francisco. It must be that season of the year – traveling with babies’ season because there were so many babies on board. Luckily they were well-behaved and slept through the boring flights as most adults did.

As soon as I landed I was off to lunch at Woodhouse Fish Co. in Castro. Usually the cultural shock begins with the first meal. Look at the portion – it’s enough to feed the hungry children in Africa! Just kidding…but it’s obviously that the serving portion in America has gone up every year. Not only I can never finish my food but also it looks like I barely make a dent in the pile of food in front of me.

In this land of Super-Size-Everything people must be growing as if they are still in their adolescence. Honestly I feel small when I’m back here. I don’t think that I’ve gotten smaller but my friends seem bigger and bigger every time I visit them. However, I never feel this way when I was in Taipei. Perhaps it comes down to perspective – when everyone around me is small then I feel like a big girl. And that’s usually the case in Asia. When I’m back in the States I feel like a midget, even when I wear heels. Tonight I feel tiny…

On a red eye flight from San Francisco to Chicago I was seated next to a woman literally 3 times of my size. Even though we’re seated in the economy plus section on United, she invaded my space and corned me to the window since she had the isle seat. She was so big that she couldn’t buckle up her seat belt. She had to ask for an extension to be added to her seat belt before buckling up. This was a horrific experience. Thank god the flight was shorter than expected - less than 4 hours. Originally I planned to sleep on the plane but as you may have guessed, I was up the whole time, feeling uncomfortable and restless. After tonight I’m all for that previous politically incorrect airline proposal - big people need to buy two seats. In this case, the woman next to me would be happier if she had two seats to herself instead of apologizing to me during the entire flight.

Shaka:The Most Relaxing Thing To Do After Work-Good Dinner, Sip Scotch Whiskey & Smoke Fine Cigar

There were over 60 bars and night spots on AnHe Road during Taiwan’s blooming economy. Ever since the recession at least half of the ownerships continued to change hands. Those unaffected by it are few and far between. One of them is Shaka, hidden in the alley for 6 years now, must be something special in order to survive and continue to flourish in this plummeting economy.

As you walk in you’ll notice the delicately crafted hardwood bar. The comfy-looking high stools are lined up along the arc shaped bar. You walk further and will find a small bar counter that’s about the height of standard office table. Supposedly this is the designated seats for regulars. The fish tank is so big that it literally takes over the entire wall. Originally it was meant to provide extra lighting in this dim space but it turned out to be the perfect feng shui spot. Customers rave about it, saying that it brings good luck for those who lay eyes on it. The interior is mixed with classic designs and modern contemporary décor. 100 seats are spread out in the bar section and lounge area on the 1st floor and booths and a cellar in the basement. The inside is spacious and cozy. The minimum charge for a booth is NT$5,000 but the capacity is more than 10 people in one booth. The cellar is built by red bricks and the stainless racks are filled with red and white wine from France and Italy. While you sip such fine wine you feel like you’re in the basement of some European château.

Happy hour is from 7 to 9:30 pm, Sunday through Thursday. When two people come together the special promotion is get two cocktails and get one free; when three’s company, it’s buy one cocktail buy one free. Cool looking bartender Robert makes an excellent “Apple Martini”﹙NT$380﹚. It is smooth and comes with an intriguing aroma. Mojito﹙NT$350﹚is what you need in order to cool off in the summer and this drink is also one of Robert’s specialties.

The regulars come straight to Shaka after work. Dinner includes Italian, Japanese, American and of course Chinese cuisine. The first and foremost recommendation from Manager XiaoGao is “Chicken Meat Dan Dan Noodles In Sichuan Style”﹙NT$300﹚. The broth is made of chicken bones and requires hours of brewing on the stove. If you’re a fan of spicy hot cuisine, this definitely will make you a happy camper. It has so much Chinese red chili peppers that it burns so good. “BBQ Short Rib Steak With Teriyaki Sauce”﹙NT$380﹚is medium rare, tender and sweet. Thanks to low-temperature grilling. Take one bite and you just want to keep it all to yourself. “Sautéed Shrimps & Mushrooms Italian Style”﹙NT$320﹚is seasoned by white wine, basil, salt and pepper. It is full of flavors.

You’ll find rarely seen brands of whiskey in Shaka and there are varieties of exquisite whiskeys on the shelf. Manager XiaoGao takes whiskey very seriously. He says that there’s no other way of serving it than a big block of ice shaped like a diamond in a whiskey tumbler. If you order a bottle of whiskey and can’t finish it all at once, you may store it on the shelf for as long as one year. There’s something worth mentioning and that is Shaka has its own brand of whiskey. The wooden barrel by the entrance is an in house blend. You can order a glass for tasting and light up a cigar – the combination is wonderful. Leave your work and worries behind and enjoy the moment because you deserve it.

Andrew Lin was a marketing executive and he enjoyed hanging out in the coffee shops. He loved traveling and wondered why most café in Taiwan didn’t provide food. The recent economical crisis became a golden opportunity and he decided to start a café of his own. It’s a cozy place where meals are served all day long, including weekend brunch. He named this café after Puccini’s famous opera, “La bohème”. And just like the title suggested, this is a meeting place for authors, artists and musicians and serves delicious and inexpensive food. Andrew not only offers the 21st century necessity-wireless service for free but also kindly installs power socket under each table. The book shelf is full of books donated by customers. You’ll have a better understanding of the clientele simply by browsing through book titles for they represent the taste of the original book owners. You’re more than welcome to grab a book while sipping coffee and have fun reading.

A. There are only 30 seats. During the day it’s a café and it turns into a bistro at night. Feel free to chitchat, mingle, work, read, and daydream or whatever you feel like depending on your mood. You can have it all here-music, caffeine, calories and alcohol.
B. “Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Iddido Coffee”﹙NT$170﹚and “Belgian Waffles With 3 Scoops Tropical Fruit Ice Cream”﹙NT$170﹚together will cool your off in the summer. This coffee has a romantic aroma of citrus, honey and jasmine.
C. “German Sausage Selection Plate”﹙NT$180﹚and “La Binchoise Beer”﹙NT$195﹚ from Belgium will put you at ease on summer nights. Take a bite of sausage and sip some Belgian beer-Just pretend that you’re on holidays in Europe, having a blast!
